Hamburg Masters Betting Tips

Before placing a bet there are a few variables that have to be considered. The current form of each player is obviously tantamount, but it is always a good idea to take a look at each venue’s court surface, where the tournament is placed on the ATP Tour calendar, and whether the weather will have any effect on the outcome of the match.

Prior to the 1980s the Hamburg Masters was held in April, directly after the Monte Carlo Masters, and before the Rome Masters. Both of these tournaments are held in the south of Europe, but Hamburg is situated in the north, and is consequently colder.

Several Hamburg Masters events were affected by sleet, ice and rain, and in 1985 the final was contested in near-freezing six-degree conditions. Czech Miloslav Mecir ended up the winner after defeating Sweden’s Henrik Sundstrom in three sets.

It is probable that those players who are used to the colder conditions will be more successful, and in the same vein, those who come from Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Russia will be more comfortable than those from Spain, Chile or South Africa.

All this changed in the year 2000 when the ATP decided to swap the dates of the Hamburg Masters with that of the Rome Masters, thus cancelling out the affect of the weather.

The Hamburg Masters is currently the final clay court event in Europe prior to the French Open Grand Slam competition. It makes sense that non-clay court specialists who have taken part in all three mandatory events will find the clay easier to manage the third time around, thus cancelling out the added advantage of preferring clay.

Then of course, we look at form. On current form the top two ranked men’s players have to be favourites going into any tournament. What will give Rafael Nadal the edge is his preference for clay. Roger Federer, however, thrives on challenges, and one of the challenges he faces is that he prefers grass and hard court to clay, so he may in fact play a more thoughtful and careful game, making him that much more dangerous. Both players are excellent Hamburg Masters betting tips.

Then there are the dozens of young clay court specialists from Latin America and Europe. Any of them, on the day, could pull off a win, and there are a couple who win consistently – David Ferrer, Fernando Gonzalez, Richard Gasquet, Tommy Robredo and Guillermo Canas.

Notwithstanding the talent and skill of all these players, Roger Federer has only to clinch one more title, and then he will be the superhero of the Hamburg Masters in perpetuity.
